A Room Full of Signs, a drawing show (21-22-23 Nov)
Demo Dema is glad to announce their upcoming drawing exhibition, "A ROOM FULL OF SIGNS," on November 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, 2024, at their art studio in Brussels.
THEMES
"A ROOM FULL OF SIGNS" showcases more than 400 of Karolina & Virgile’s drawings created over the past 4 years. The exhibition explores themes of collective memory in an age of mass media and the role of drawing as a vessel for signs through time. A sign is understood here as any image, text, or number encountered daily whose meaning resonates with the artists and eventually finds its way into their work - from a cat sticker in the street to a photo headlining the news.
The show’s title can be read literally. An art-studio-turned-gallery of images of events, people, animals, and objects happening all at once, simultaneously conveying visions, memories and warnings.
WORKS
Notable series will be exhibited for the first time. Karolina’s Birds Archives and The Brink document the ongoing mass extinction. Presented in the Bird Room, Karolina’s 105 bird portraits stand side by side in an immersive experience. Viewers are invited to sit in the space and contemplate the combined beauty of the world’s bird species. While considering what is at risk or already lost, “Birds Archives” also invites us to free ourselves from a nostalgic vision of nature and embrace Earth’s permanent change and renewal.
There’s ecological collapse, and there’s the Olympics—both unfolding side by side. Our Paris 2024 project, created during a 10-day drawing residency this year, reports on the daily progress of the Games while highlighting media bias in the coverage of the event.
LAYOUT
"A ROOM FULL OF SIGNS" transforms Demo Dema’s studio into a comprehensive archive of their artistic practice. All drawings are presented next to each other in a uniform A4 format, creating an immersive wall-to-wall experience. Viewers are invited to engage with individual drawings/signs while appreciating the greater story they tell collectively. Drawings are shown in individual plastic sleeves, turning them into forensic evidence of a world in constant flux.
Join us for opening night on Thursday, November 21st, from 6-9 PM. Visits by appointment available on the 22nd and 23rd from 12-6 PM.
