Tarot (2024-2025)

A Collaboration by Karolina Dema & Virgile Demo

Tarot is a system of symbolic cards used for self-reflection and storytelling. The 78 cards of the tarot deck are organised in two Arcanas: the Major Arcana, which consists of 22 cards, and the Minor Arcana, which consists of 56 cards. Each card represents a distinctive character with a specific system of attributes.

Drawing Tarot cards is both an artistic and a spiritual project, a process in self-learning and in opening up to the possibilities of the universe. To draw Tarot is to join a long line of artists, both celebrated and unknown, including  British illustrator Pamela Coleman-Smith and Georgian painter Nino Japaridze.

In this ongoing project, Karolina and Virgile reinterpret the 22 Major Arcana, reinterpreting timeless symbols through their artistic lens, beginning with the first five cards: The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Chariot, and Strength. In all of these drawings, Dema uses her own body and face, creating an intimate connection between self-portraiture and the archetypal imagery of the tarot.

Each image serves as a portal, with every detail signifying possible futures. More cards will follow in the coming months.
